Pope Francis assures sceptics: You don’t have to believe in God to go to heaven
In comments likely to enhance his progressive reputation, Pope Francis has written a long, open letter to the founder of La Repubblica newspaper, Eugenio Scalfari, stating that nonbelievers would be forgiven by God if they followed their consciences.
Responding to a list of questions published in the paper by Mr Scalfari, who is not a Roman Catholic, Francis wrote: “You ask me if the God of the Christians forgives those who don’t believe and who don’t seek the faith. I start by saying – and this is the fundamental thing – that God’s mercy has no limits if you go to him with a sincere and contrite heart. The issue for those who do not believe in God is to obey their conscience.
“Sin, even for those who have no faith, exists when people disobey their conscience.” Robert Mickens, the Vatican correspondent for the Catholic journal The Tablet, said the pontiff’s comments were further evidence of his attempts to shake off the Catholic Church’s fusty image, reinforced by his extremely conservative predecessor Benedict XVI. “Francis is a still a conservative,” said Mr Mickens. “But what this is all about is him seeking to have a more meaningful dialogue with the world.”
In a welcoming response to the letter, Mr Scalfari said the Pope’s comments were “further evidence of his ability and desire to overcome barriers in dialogue with all”. In July, Francis signalled a more progressive attitude on sexuality, asking: “If someone is gay and is looking for the Lord, who am I to judge him?”

Re: You don’t have to believe in God to go to heaven
On a related note i got the latest issue of Truth In History today.
I found the site years ago looking up Dr.Dowie.
The new issue is all about the Papacy.
Wycliffe,Luther,Melanchthon,Knox,Cranmer,Ridley*,Calvin,Tyndale* and John Wesley
all viewed the Papacy as the Antichrist.
(murdered by the Papacy)
I remember reading that Jesuits "crept in unawares "into the Protestant Church and some how changed the view of the Antichrist from being the Papacy like these Reformers believed and died for ....to a future person of some kind.
i do recall reading this also in the "studies in the scriptures" volume 2 chapter 9.i must say it stunned me.
as i have said many times eschatology is one of my many weak points.

Not making any excuses for him but is he talking about these people?
If one has never ever heard about God, Jesus Christ or the gospel as billions of people in the world today, in China, central Australia, Papua, East Timor, South America, the Congo, darkest Africa, to name a few, and in past generations, God will do right by them! How can all these people believe in something or someone they have never heard about and know absolutely nothing about???
God will judge these people accordingly as Scripture clearly teaches. God will do right even by those who have never ever even heard of Him! or any other name associated with and to God. God has revealed His method of dealing with these people even those who have never heard the gospel.
Paul stated in Romans 2:12-16 that God will do right by every man according to the light he has recieved. He said, "For as many as have sinned without law shall also perish without law: and as many as have sinned in the law shall be judged by the law; (for not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the doers of the law shall be justified. For when the gentiles, which have not the law, do by nature the things contained in the law, these having not the law, are a law unto themselves: which shew the work of the law written in their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts the meanwhile accusing or else excusing one another;) In the day when God shall judge the secrets fo men by Jesus Christ according to my gospel."
."The issue for those who do not believe in God is to obey their conscience.
“Sin, even for those who have no faith, exists when people disobey their conscience.”

Re: You don’t have to believe in God to go to heaven
The Pope speaks in the spirit of Satan. His blasphemy will lead many astray, causing many to miss God, miss Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ unto Salvation, miss the leading of The Holy Spirit, and may make their eyes, ears, and hearts unable to perceive The Glorious Gospel of Jesus Christ... His "teaching" mahes The Sacrifice of Christ a mockery, making it, hence Jesus, of no effect.
Perhaps the False Prophet has come upon the world stage of Bible Prophecy...
The Roman Catholic Church would seem to have "outed" itself, finally, as Satan's church...
We'll now see if truly Saved Christians will leave that Hellish organization ...
Pray for those in bondage to the Roman Catholic Church, that God will lead them out, and deliver them...

I don't know who the Pope is talking about. If it is atheists then I would say he is dead wrong. If he is talking about people like Iroman suggestted then I would say that is an interesting view point one that isn't defined in scripture.

Dionne Warwick says that you'll never get to heaven if you break my heart. So be nice.
