What makes you believe there was no church? There was a Church, Judaism, from which the early pagan Catholic Church took some of Judaism to form her ungodly system.

The Jews had many blessings above all other nations. In enumerating these many special privileges the Apostle Paul lays the principal stress upon their being favored with a divine revelation, the oracles of God, to guide them to present and everlasting happiness. But with the many incalculable advantages, their religion at the time of Christ was not much superior to the religion of the Gentiles. It is true they recognized only one God, but theirs was a religion primarily of ceremonies with a lacking of moral restraint.

The nature of the Jewish religion may be collected from the books of the Old Testament; but at the time of Christ’s appearance, it had lost much of its original beauty and excellence, and was corrupted by errors of the most flagrant kind, that had crept in from various sources. The public worship of God was indeed still continued in the temple of Jerusalem, with all the rites of the Mosaic institution; and their festivals never failed to draw together immense crowds of people at the stated seasons; nor did the Romans ever interfere to prevent those observances. In domestic life also, the ordinances of the law were in general punctually attended to; but it is manifest, from the evidence adduced by various learned men, that even in the service of the temple itself, numerous ceremonies, observances, drawn from the religious worship of heathen nations, had been introduced and blended with those of divine institution; and that in addition to superstitions like these of a public nature, many erroneous principles, brought from Babylon and Chaldea, by the ancestors of the people at their return from captivity, or adopted by the inconsiderate multitude, in conformity to the examples of their neighbors the Greeks, the Syrians, and the Egyptians, were cherished and acted on in private.

It was into a world permeated by Paganism and Judaism that Jesus came and established his church. As a tiny island is surrounded by the waters of an ocean so the first church was surrounded by the mighty forces of these two religious systems.

The rising tide of Paganism began early to seep into many of the churches. Even during the third century much of the religion of the times was little more than a compound of Paganism and Judaism with a slight seasoning of Christianity. THAT IS A REFORMER TALKING. I DONT BUY THAT.CHRISTIANS WERE DYING FOR THEIR FAITH.
What Church do you believe Paul wrote the book of Romans for? Was it the Catholic Church? YES THE UNIVERSAL CHURCH.

Rom 1:15, "So, as much as in me is, I am ready to preach the gospel to you that are at Rome also."

 THATS A FABRICATION.THEY ALL WERE UNDER THE AUTHORITY OF THE APOSTLES.
The churches in those Ancient times, were entirely independent; none of them subject to any foreign jurisdiction, but each governed by its own rules and its own laws. For though the churches founded by the apostles had their deference shown them, that they were consulted in different and doubtful cases; yet they had no judicial authority, no sort of supremacy over the others, nor the least right to enact laws for them. Nothing, on the contrary, is more evident than the perfect equality that reigned among the primitive churches. Many of the churches turned from a congregational rule to that of preacher rule. Emperor Constantine of the Roman Empire wanted the powers of Christianity and (in name, at least) he became a Christian.
THE APOSTLES HAD FULL APOSTOLIC AUTHORITY OVER ALL THE CHURCHES.

i think that a study of Church history from Encyclopedias +hammer not from books with an axe to grind show that the teachings and creeds of the early fathers are believed by most Churches today.

its insane to deny this.its just close minded bigotry.

Here's the latest from the, ((CATHOLIC CATECHISM NEW TEACHING) for you billy, read it for yourself and Join up if you like! Before you join in this cause of seeking converts for the Catholic Church, it would be wise to pause long enough to find out just what the Catholic Church believes and teaches.

The Catholic Doctrine on Salvation
The Catholic Church believes that salvation must be attained by both faith and works, and that baptism is necessary for salvation. Official Catholic doctrine proclaims that anyone who believes in salvation by faith alone, or that baptism is not essential for salvation, is Anathema, or cursed. Here is what the Council of Trent has to say:

"If anyone says that baptism is optional, that is, not necessary for salvation, LET HIM BE ANATHEMA." Canon 5

"If anyone says that justifying faith is nothing else than confidence in divine mercy, which remits sins for Christ's sake, or that it is this confidence alone that justifies us, LET HIM BE ANATHEMA." Canon 12

[Some are under the false impression that since Catholic priests are participating in Promise Keepers, this proves that Catholics have the true doctrine of salvation. This reasoning is faulty - Mormons and Campbellites are also participating in PK, but that does not prove that they have the true doctrine of salvation. Roman Catholics most certainly do not have the true understanding of how to be saved, since they make baptism and good works to be essential for salvation.]

Current Catholic Teaching on the Confessional
As of 1996, the Catholic Church was insisting that the faithful go to their priests for confession: "The pope has issued a warning to all Catholics, saying they must provide their priest with a 'specific and numerically complete' list of their sins when going to confession. A recent Ecumenical News International press release quoted Pope John Paul !I as saying that many Catholics do not 'make a complete list of mortal sins in the way called for by the Council of Trent ....' Pope John Paul says he wants Catholics to realize that this is not an 'arbitrarily imposed burden, but a means of liberation and serenity."' (Source, Foundation, May-June 1996)

[Sad isn't it? How many times did you do it my son, who did you do it with, did you enjoy it, blah, blah, blah, blah,]

The Sacrifice of the Mass
Here is what the new "Catechism of the Catholic Church" teaches about the Sacrament of Eucharist, or Communion: "The Eucharist cleanses us from past sins and preserves us from future sins.... " It is called the "Holy Sacrifice, because it makes present the one sacrifice of Christ the Savior and includes the Church's offering.... As sacrifice, the Eucharist is also offered in reparation for the sins of the living and the dead and to obtain spiritual or temporal benefits from God."

[More error, CATHOLIC MASS PROVED INVALID BY THE SCRIPTURES. The invalidity of the Mass is proved by its being continued. If any Mass could validly apply the infinite merits of Christ's sacrifice for men, Then one Mass would suffice for eternity, since His work is infinite. The fact that a priest offers Mass for the same people every day, including every Sunday proves that yesterdays and last Sunday's Mass were useless and invalid, for they accomplished no eternal Divine work Catholics do not believe that the death of Christ on the Cross was sufficient to forgive sins. For this reason, they continually sacrifice what they believe to be the body, blood, soul and divinity of Christ at the sacrifice of the mass. Priests believe they have the power to turn the wafer into Christ - thus, the consecrated wafer becomes an object of worship, which is idolatry, which is very strongly forbidden by the Word of God..]

Mary is Presented as Savior of Mankind
On April 9, 1997, Pope John Paul II issued this statement on the saving role of Mary:

"In union with Christ and yielding to Him, She collaborated to obtain the grace of salvation for all humanity.... Having created man male and female, in the Redemption too, the Lord wanted to put the New Eve next to the New Adam .... Mary, the New Eve, thus becomes the perfect icon of the Church. She, in the divine plan, represents under the Cross redeemed humanity, which, needy of salvation, is made capable of offering a contribution to the development of the saving work." (Source, O Timothy, Issue 5, 1997)

[The Catholic Catechism presents Mary as co-redeemer of mankind, saying "Being obedient she became the cause of salvation for herself and for the whole human race .... This union of the mother with the Son in the work of salvation is made manifest from the time of Christ's virginal conception up to his death…. She is inseparably linked with the saving work of her Son. Do you believe this rubbish billy?]

Mary as an Object of Worship
On May 7, 1997, Pope John Paul I proclaimed, based on John 19, that "it is possible to understand the authentic meaning of Marian worship, in the ecclesial community … which furthermore is based on the will of Christ .... the history of Christian piety teaches that Mary is the path that leads to Christ." (Source, O Timothy, Issue 6, 1997.)

[The Catholic Catechism teaches that "The Church's devotion to the Blessed Virgin is intrinsic to Christian worship.... The liturgical feasts dedicated to the Mother of God and Marian prayer such as the rosary, an epitome of the whole Gospel, expresses this devotion to the Virgin Mary." The encyclical "Redemptoris Mater" dated March 25, 1987, informs us, "As a rule, the first Saturday of each month, Pope John Paul II prays the Holy Rosary before an image of the Virgin Mary, either in the Hall of Benedictions above St. Peter's Basilica, or in the larger Paul IV Audience Hall." This is idolatry, and the Bible forbids us to associate with idolaters in religious work, demanding that we separate from them, 2 Cor. 6:14-18. Got that Billy? THIS IS BLASPHEMY IN THE HIGHEST ORDER].

The Pope Pontificates on Evolution
In 1950, Pope Plus XII declared that Darwinian evolution was a serious hypothesis, and that it was permissible for Catholics to believe in it. In October, 1996 Pope John Paul II went further declaring "New knowledge leads us to recognize in the theory of evolution more than a hypothesis.... The convergence, neither sought nor induced, of results of work done independently one from the other, constitutes in itself a significant argument in favor of this theory." (Christian News, Nov. 18, 1~96)

Some conservative Catholics were alarmed by this statement, and it was suggested that the Pope's commendation of Darwinian evolution was perhaps a mistranslation of his remarks. Further investigation has confirmed that the Pope's remarks were translated correctly, and that he did indeed endorse the theory of evolution.

[Pope ignores Scripture, under the order of his leader, SATAN, the author of DEVILUTION. Billy read, Gen. 1:1, In the beginning God created; John 1: 3, All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made. THAT SHOOTS DEVILUTION OUT OF THE WATER UNLESS ONE BELIEVES THE POPE RATHER THAN GOD! The Roman Catholic Church no longer takes a strong stand for the inerrancy of the Word of God. Many leading Catholic theologians have accepted the conclusions of the liberal "higher criticism" of the Bible and have denied cardinal doctrines of the faith, including the Holy Trinity. Evangelicals looking for allies in their battle for the fundamentals of the faith need not waste their time with the Catholic Church, which is rapidly slipping into modernism.]

Current Catholic Teaching on Baptism
The latest word from the Catholic Church on the subject of baptism can be found in the "Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification" issued in February, 1997 and approved by the National Conference of Catholic Bishops in the United States in August, 1997. According to this declaration, salvation is by baptism:

"By the action of the Holy Spirit in baptism, they are granted the gift of salvation, which lays the basis for the whole Christian life .... Catholics hold that the grace of Jesus Christ imparted in baptism takes away all that is sin in the proper sense and that is worthy of damnation."

Here is what the new Catholic Catechism says about infant baptism: "The Church and the parents would deny a child the priceless Grace of becoming a child of God were they not to confer Baptism shortly after birth." "By Baptism all sins are forgiven, original sin and all personal sins, as well as all punishment for sin."

[Defenders of the ecumenical movement insist that Baptists must join with Catholics in evangelistic work, on the basis that the Catholics are now sound on the doctrine of salvation. Obviously, this is not true. Official Catholic doctrine teaches that salvation comes by baptism, not by faith in Christ. Those who believe that Catholic priests are somehow preaching the true gospel message to their people would do well to read the primary documents of Catholicism, to find out what Catholics really believe. Billy, you know infant baptism is unbiblical and sins are not forgiven purly by being sprinkled on the forehead with a few drops of water alone?]

The Faith of Chicago's Cardinal Bernardin
In March, 1995, Joseph Cardinal Bernardin of Chicago surprised a lot of people when he stated that the Gospel of John in the New Testament contains erroneous, anti-Semitic teaching, and that Christians must repudiate such teaching. (See Christian News, April 10, 1995.) This story was carried on page 1 of the Chicago Sun-Times. Bernardin was not a believer in biblical inerrancy.

When Bernardin was dying of a terminal illness, the Chicago newspapers reported at length on his hopes for the afterlife. Bernardin expressed the hope that he might be found worthy of heaven because of the physical sufferings and pain he was experiencing. No explanation was given as to how a person who died peacefully and without pain might earn his way into heaven. Bernardin, a man respected and looked up to by Chicagoans of all faiths, had no understanding of the Bible plan of salvation.

[ Suffering a painfull death does not make one worthy of Heaven. This is more garbage as usual. To this day, the 2.3 million members of the Chicago Archdiocese still do not have the light of the gospel nor the knowledge of how to be saved. Thousands of their homes in Chicago are adorned with anti-Protestant placards stating that they will not accept any non-Catholic Gospel literature.]

The Council of Trent - What Catholics Really Believe
We have already seen that the Council of Trent condemns any belief in salvation by faith alone, and insists that infants are saved by baptism. Let us take a look at some of the other decrees of the Council of Trent:

"8. I firmly hold that there is a purgatory, and that the souls therein detained are helped by the suffrages of the faithful.

"Likewise, that the saints reigning with Christ are to be honored and invoked, and that they offer up prayers to God for us; and that their relics are to be held in veneration.

"9. I most firmly assert that the images of Christ and of the perpetual Virgin, the Mother of God, and also of other saints, ought to be had and retained, and that due honor and veneration are to be given them."

The decrees of the Council of Trent issued in 1563, are still official Catholic doctrine today. The New Catholic Catechism of 1994 refers to Trent approximately 100 times, and in 1995 Pope John Paul II declared that the conclusions of Trent "naturally maintain all their value."

In 1997, various Southern Baptist theologians, including Paige Patterson, refused to sign an unofficial document in which some Catholic scholars supposedly agreed that they believe in salvation by faith alone. Patterson stated, "Baptist evangelicals don't have any business signing any doctrinal consensus papers with Rome until Rome disassociates itself from the Council of Trent." (Source, Christian News, December 15, 1997)

The Catholic Church is Not Christian and We Have No Business Sending Anyone into the Church of Rome. Sufficient information has been presented here, from official Roman Catholic sources, to show that the Catholic Church preaches a false Gospel which is not Christian in nature IN ANY WAY. It goes without saying that the Catholic "churches" are not true churches, nor do they have the true baptism, or the true Lord's Supper.

For true Christians, who have the true gospel, the true Church, the true baptism and the true Lord's Supper, there can be no possible justification or excuse before a holy God, under any circumstances whatsoever, for them to withhold the blessings that we have from anyone, by sending religious inquirers into the Catholic Church.

Sorry billy, were mates and I'm not afraid to tell you, your not only off the road in a ditch, your actually BOG-SNORKLING THEOUGH A SWAMP OF MISS-INFIRMATION AND BELIEVING IT! WAKE UP MATE!

The Catholic Church is SATANS CHURCH not of God in any way!

I used to go to confession. I knelt in a small cubical, the priest behind a fly screen covered with a black curtain. The curtain slides back. Priest says, "Yes my son." I say; "Forgive me father for I have sinned, its been three weeks since my last confession, and these are my sins. I have done this, I have done that, and something else."

As a young boy full of testosterone, If any sin I may have confessed was of even the slightest sexual nature, like, I read a book which had pics of nude women like playboy, I lusted after women, the priest says; "How many times did you do this my son, did you enjoy this, and all the rest, as if he was enjoying the scene???? When it was all over the priest says;

"May God give you pardon and peace, and I absolve you from your sins in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit." Now say fifty rosaries ????????? as your penance! Yeh, this is God's true church :-|

AS an adult, after studying the Bible for myself I ask, who gave these sinning men the right to not only hear a confession, but to forgive sins?? My poor mother paid our local priest a large sum of money, all she had saved, to hold a mass to get my father out of purgatory! I will never forget that time in our lives. As a young man with a family, I was supporting my mother and paying all her living expenses because she was so poor and yet she was duped enough to give her last penny to this satanic church?
"Indulgences. Originally they were meant to be a substitute for Earthly penance or restitution, but that the sinner would still be accountable to God and have to face his punishment. Slowly they began to be sold as a way to remit both punishments, and eventually could be used to free other peoples' souls from purgatory posthumously. This is where Luther took offense."
.

Indulgences were still in when my Father died? Praise God for the Catholic Church. This godly church helps widows, yes it does! Dear widow, I will get you husband out of purgatory no worries! It will cost you this much!

What a farce!

The fact is every denomination Protestant or Catholic has bad things in it. I remember instances in major denominations where the leadership was convicted of fraud, stealing from the church. In other cases the leadership was found guilty of having elicit sex. In still others people were convicted of pedophilia, drug usage, you name it. Does that make the doctrinal principals of the denomination/church/religion bad? No, it simply shows that when man is involved man will corrupt it sooner or later.

I don't believe there is a church/denomination Protestant or Catholic that has never had major problems within it's ranks.Does that mean the faithful followers of the church/denomination Protestant or Catholic is going to hell? No it means it leadership may be in danger of Hell's fire. But if the church/denomination Protestant or Catholic has as it defining doctrine the truth of Jesus Christ and if people are faithfully following those doctrines then I believe they will be saved.
Be they Catholic or Protestant, Pentecostal, Methodist, Baptist or whatever.

So am I billy, so am I. And I'm not a kid either, and I'm 67 and I have also been through some very serious things as well, and I refuse to be a defender of the Catholic faith because people I love and know are members in it and are blindly being let and are doing every thing God forbids!

Here's what Jesus called the fundamental church leaders of His day? And these blokes were the leaders of the faith Jesus as a boy grew up in, His earthly mother, father and siblings were all practicing members in that church? Its not the people billy, its the leaders, the church heads, who say do this and they do the opposite, they know what God wants and they do what God does not want.

He said; Luke 20:46, Beware of the scribes, which desire to walk in long robes, and love greetings in the markets, and the highest seats in the synagogues, and the chief rooms at feasts;

Luke 11:44, Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are as graves which appear not, and the men that walk over them are not aware of them.

He also said;

Matt. 23:2, Saying, The scribes and the Pharisees sit in Moses' seat:

Matt. 23:13, But woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye shut up the kingdom of heaven against men: for ye neither go in yourselves, neither suffer ye them that are entering to go in.

Matt. 23:14, Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayer: therefore ye shall receive the greater damnation. Matt. 23:15, Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye compass sea and land to make one proselyte, and when he is made, ye make him twofold more the child of hell than yourselves.

Matt. 23:23, Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.

Matt. 23:25, Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye make clean the outside of the cup and of the platter, but within they are full of extortion and excess.

Matt. 23:27, Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye are like unto whited sepulchres, which indeed appear beautiful outward, but are within full of dead men's bones, and of all uncleanness.

Matt. 23:29, Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! because ye build the tombs of the prophets, and garnish the sepulchres of the righteous,

He could say the same things to the Pope, Bishops and Cardinals of the Roman Church today!

Justaned wrote

.

But the catholic church does not have as its defining doctrine, the truth of Jesus Christ.

Where in Scripture does it say Mary is co-redemptrix?

Where in Scripture dies it say pray the repetitious rosary?

Where in Scripture dies it say babies must be baptized or they will not enter heaven should they die?

Where in Scripture dies it say worship statues of popes, Mary, dead saints, and tell a man your sins?

Where in Scripture dies it say the Pope is actually Jesus Christ on Earth?

Where in Scripture dies it say unless your in the Catholic Church and give honour and aligience to the Pope you will never enter Heaven?

Where in Scripture dies it say one must call a priest Father?

Where in Scripture dies it say we may call the Pope, "Holy Father," a name reserved for God the Father alone? The name Jesus called His Father in Heaven one time in Scripture?

John 17:11, And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee. HOLY FATHER, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are.

The list is nearly endless!
