I was Not Known by My Name JEHOVAH... to Them
Exodus 6:1-3 King James Version (Quotation marks added for clarity and study)
Then the LORD said unto Moses, "Now shalt thou see what I will do to Pharaoh: for with a strong hand shall he let them go, and with a strong hand shall he drive them out of his land." And God spake unto Moses, and said unto him, "I am the LORD: And I appeared unto Abraham, unto Isaac, and unto Jacob, by the name of God Almighty, but by my name JEHOVAH was I not known to them.
The name "JEHOVAH" is Strong's Hebrew word 3068. It is utilized several times by Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and others prior to Exodus 6:1-3.
What does it mean that God was not known by the name "JEHOVAH" prior to Exodus 6:1-3? Especially, if that name was definitely in use prior to and by those that were said not to know the Name?

Could it be possible, that the "them" of your citing were the Egyptians Moses was to speak to ?Spiritblade Disciple wrote: ↑Sun Nov 09, 2025 12:25 am Exodus 6:1-3 King James Version (Quotation marks added for clarity and study)

They wouldn't be privy to that name, prior to it's use by Moses.
And I don't see that name being used before God spoke in Ex 6:1.
Though used once in combination, to name a mountain in Gen 22:14.

Re: I was Not Known by My Name JEHOVAH... to Them
I don't think that works, given that the word "them" refers to Israel in the same passage. I think changing who "them" is talking about in the passage without a clear reason is illogical.
The name "JEHOVAH" is Strong's Hebrew word 3068. It is rendered "LORD" in the King James Old Testament in Genesis in the stories pertaining to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. And, it is utilized by them and others, demonstrating that they knew that Name. The KJV just doesn't render it as "JEHOVAH" in those passages, rendering it as "LORD," instead.

If God said it, why argue the validity of it ?Spiritblade Disciple wrote: ↑Sun Nov 09, 2025 9:18 pmI don't think that works, given that the word "them" refers to Israel in the same passage. I think changing who "them" is talking about in the passage without a clear reason is illogical.
If the Jews didn't know the name Jehovah, before God said they would, I can't argue with God.The name "JEHOVAH" is Strong's Hebrew word 3068. What Jews? No one was called a Jew in Genesis or Exodus?

Just trying to understand the meaning of the statement that He wasn't known to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, by His Name ("JEHOVAH"), even though Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob are portrayed by Moses as having utilized that Name (rendered "LORD" in the KJV when it was utilized).

Don't get too nit-picky now.Spiritblade Disciple wrote: ↑Mon Nov 10, 2025 12:42 amWhat Jews? No one was called a Jew in Genesis or Exodus?
Though all Jews are Israelites, not all Israelites are Jews. Mea culpa...

I guess that "Lord" and "Jehovah" are interchangeable.Spiritblade Disciple wrote: ↑Mon Nov 10, 2025 12:46 amJust trying to understand the meaning of the statement that He wasn't known to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, by His Name ("JEHOVAH"), even though Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob are portrayed by Moses as having utilized that Name (rendered "LORD" in the KJV when it was utilized).

No Israelites were Jews before 2nd Kings 16:6. That's when the term was first utilized for anyone in the Bible. Hundreds of years (over 700 years) after the Exodus.

When the Hebrew word underlying the English translation is the same, yes.
And, that's the issue.
Exodus 6:3 says the name "Jehovah" wasn't known to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. Yet, the same Hebrew word rendered "Jehovah" in Exodus 6:3 is utilized by Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob in the stories about them and by them in Genesis.
