I don't like the word "washing " ....
The KJV renders it 'doctrine of baptisms '
Which the Christians would understand.
Why would Paul write ' the teaching of washings '
Which has no point of reference in the body of Christ.?

I looked up the word baptisms in Hebrews 6:1-2 in a Greek Concordance.

The Greek word is baptismos a dipping or washing

from the word baptizo to dip ,sink

Rev.Dake has this in the Dake Bible note o on Hebrews 6:2
and says there are 7 baptisms in Scripture.


The KJV and NKJV translated the word as baptisms.

The newer versions i looked at say washings.

The word baptisms fits the context much better than washings.

Dake was fairly thorough on the subject of baptism. Context is vital and often it is assumed where baptism is used water is the element used when it basically means to dip, sink, as you put it, yet the element can be a variety of things which Dake was very good at pointing out.

There are many baptisms such as the cloud, the sea, fire, water, in Christ, in the Spirit, etc. The baptism in Christ has nothing to do with water - a dipping/immersion into Christ. The baptism in the Spirit is an immersion into the Spirit. The baptism in water is obviously water. The baptism in fire can have different meanings such as the Spirit or physical fire.

I checked out Albert Barnes' commentary and Matthew Henry's commentary.

Both renowned respected Bible scholars say that Hebrews 6:2 is talking about
Christian water baptism not Jewish ceremonial washings.

The KJV says baptisms.So does the NKJV.
The American Standard Version says baptisms.
