Re: is the anointing the same as gifts and calling
Hi there,
I don't think they are the same. The anointing (Greek 'chrisma') is the source of the gifts (Greek 'charisma'). The anointing is when the Holy Spirit fills and empowers to such an extent that there is an outflow of his work from our life, as Jesus talks about in John 7. Dake points out, for example, that Paul was enabled by the Spirit's anointing to get right to work preaching Jesus as God's Son after he was filled by the Spirit through the ministry of Ananias. As Dake points out, Paul had studied the Scriptures for years, but it was only the Spirit's anointing that he could now see their truth and convince others that Jesus is the Messiah. Compare 1 John 2 which speaks of the believer's anointing and its impact in our lives when false teaching comes knocking.
Since the anointing refers to the Holy Spirit (as that which is smeared or poured out on us) and all the gifts flow from him, they are not one and the same.
In his comments on Romans 11:29 Dake presents the viewpoint that the gifts and calling of God are not revoked, even though God may not be able to fulfill them in someone due to their failure. In terms of your question, I think that means a person may lose the anointing of the Spirit through sin, but God doesn't change his mind about the gifts and calling he had given them. God's gifts and call are never rescinded. They are still under warranty.
