"I was in the Spirit on the Lord's day, and heard behind me a great voice, as of a trumpet," (Rev. 1:10).
John was totally, completly in union with the Holy Spirit and fully yielded to Him. He was in union with, consecrated to the same end-one mind, purpose and life, not bodily enterance into. It can be best understood by a man and a woman becoming "one" in life, together, to be in each others plans. And the two shall become one, in unity. Husband and wife can never enter bodily into each other? And so it is with the Holy Spirit. he can be in us and we in Him, just as we are in Jesus and Jesus in us.
We can be with others in the Spirit as well.
"For though I be absent in the flesh, yet am I with you in the spirit, joying and beholding your order, and the stedfastness of your faith in Christ." Col. 2:5.
We are in the Spirit, or we are not His!
"But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his." (Romans 8:9.
"If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit." (Gal . 5:25). "And be renewed in the spirit of your mind;" (Eph. 4:23). "Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints;" (Eph. 6:18). "For we are the circumcision, which worship God in the spirit, and rejoice in Christ Jesus, and have no confidence in the flesh." (Phil. 3:3). "Who also declared unto us your love in the Spirit." (Col. 1:8).
And James 4:5, "Do ye think that the scripture saith in vain, The spirit that dwelleth in us lusteth to envy?" with 1 Peter 4:6, "For for this cause was the gospel preached also to them that are dead, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit."
"And immediately I was in the spirit: and, behold, a throne was set in heaven, and one sat on the throne." Revelation 4:2, John cameto be in the Spirit as in Rev. verse 1:10.
