Eating before your weak brother causing him to perish

Post by bibleman »

1 Corinthians 8:11 And through thy knowledge shall the weak brother perish, for whom Christ died?
12 But when ye sin so against the brethren, and wound their weak conscience, ye sin against Christ.

Am I right in reading this passage (in Hill Top's mind)... that a Christian would NEVER eat anything that might cause his brother of a weak conscience to perish? That is since a Christian cannot sin???

You are correct.

If a new brother had a problem with ham, or beer, or some other thing Christians are free to eat/drink, we would teach them the truth about the subject matter.
If they continue to be offended, they show they are unable to receive the truth from the scriptures.
They are just there to cause division.

If they refuse the teachings, they are not my brothers.
They have a different spirit than the one given by God to the repentant.
They have no basis on which to be offended.

And Paul says that they "shall perish!"

What if they refuse your truth/teachings and not His truth? Because they disagree with your teachings does not mean they are there to cause division, or that they are not of the Lord. If you know your brother is weak and you cause him to stumble you are in sin against the Lord, no matter how you try to slice it.

As they would have perished anyway, not being in the faith, what does it matter?
Teach them there is no need to be offended !

Pick something they might be offended by.
Eating meat?
Where is the offense in eating something God has given us to enjoy: something "sanctified by the word of God and prayer". (1 Tim 4:5)
Supply some example, as I see nothing to be offended by.

It matters because you (the offender) would be the one that caused them to sin!

Plus it also shows you that a BROTHER can sin and perish.

It matters because you (the offender) would be the one that caused them to sin!
If they refuse a teaching that should alleviate any offense, they are not of the same Father.
Plus it also shows you that a BROTHER can sin and perish.
It shows who is still walking after the flesh.
Those in Christ walk in the Spirit, after they have been baptized into Christ and into His death.
New converts are to be open to the teachings of the bishop...right?
If they are not, they have placed their own agenda ahead of the church's teachings.
That is idolatry.
