Do You Know that Noah was NOT 120 years building the Ark

Post by bibleman »

There is a common misunderstanding that Noah was 120 years building the Ark.
4. Do You Know - That Noah was not 120 years building the ark? In Gen. 6:8-10 we read that by the time Noah was told to build the ark he already had three sons. According to Gen. 6:18, these three sons were already grown and married by the time God told Noah to build the boat. In Gen. 11:10 we read that two years after the flood Shem was only 100 years old. Noah and his family were in the ark one year and 17 days, so that made Shem 96 years of age when he entered the ark. Thus, if he was a grown man and married before Noah was told to build the ark, and since Shem was only 96 years of age when it was finished, it obviously did not take 120 years to build the ark. The 120 years of Gen. 6:3 refers to Adam, not Noah.
Finis J. Dake, God's Plan for Man, (Lawrenceville, GA: Dake Publishing, Inc., 2004), WORDsearch CROSS e-book, 34.
Genesis 6:8 But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD.
9 This is the genealogy of Noah. Noah was a just man, perfect in his generations. Noah walked with God.
10 And Noah begot three sons: Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

Genesis 6:18 But I will establish My covenant with you; and you shall go into the ark--you, your sons, your wife, and your sons' wives with you.

Genesis 11:10 This is the genealogy of Shem: Shem was one hundred years old, and begot Arphaxad two years after the flood.

Genesis 6:3 And the LORD said, "My Spirit shall not strive with man forever, for he is indeed flesh; yet his days shall be one hundred and twenty years."

Many people think that from Genesis 6:3.

Many people think that from Genesis 6:3.
I wonder why.?
I also wonder why Rev Dake thought it referred to Adam when Gen 5:3 says Adam was already 130 years old when he had Seth.
And in Gen 5:5 that Adam lived a total of 930 years?

Genesis 6:3 And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years.

Genesis 6:3 referring to "the man Adam" had a lot to do with the notes from Hebrew Scholar EW Bullinger as found in the Companion Bible.
man: with art., as in vv. 1 and 2 = the man Adam, Ap. 14. i.
he: emphatic, i.e. the man Adam.
also: i.e. the man Adam also, as well as the others. (Not “men”; if so, as well as—what?)
is flesh. If taken as a verb, then it = “in their erring”. Heb. shāgăg. Ap. 44. xii. Adam had become like the others.
yet his days = yet Adam’s days. See Ap. 24.
120 years: this fixes the date A.M. 930–120–810. The B.C. date being 3194, as given.
