I have always thought it was Mark.

Mark mentions: Mary, Jesus’ “brothers”: James, Joses, Judas, Simon, Mary, mother of James the younger and of Joses, Philip, Bartholomew, Matthew, Thomas, Thaddaeus, Simon, Andrew, James, John, Peter, Judas Iscariot, Bartimaeus, Jairus, Joseph of Arimathea, Levi, Mary Magdalene, Salome, Simon of Cyrene, Simon the Leper,

So out of all the people he calls by name he NEVER mentions himself. The book of Mark itself doesn't even say that Mark wrote it.

Now I also believe that Mark was a very humble young man, BUT if you had ran away from Jesus naked... Would you tell everyone it was you???

Mark 14:51 Now a certain young man followed Him, having a linen cloth thrown around his naked body. And the young men laid hold of him,
52 and he left the linen cloth and fled from them naked. (NKJV)

After all at the writing of this Gospel by Mark he was already known for running away one time...

WHEN WAS THAT? Anybody know?

He is unknown and isn't important.
Who was the "ruler" who was very sorrowful after hearing he was to sell all he had and give it to the poor? (Luke 18:18-23)
As these questions can only be answered with suppositions, why would anyone deem them important?

I don't think so Billy,

The Greek word is only used 2 times in the NT and in neither place does it imply they almost got into a fist fight.

Acts 15:39 And the contention was so sharp between them, that they departed asunder one from the other: and so Barnabas took Mark, and sailed unto Cyprus;

And in Hebrews 10:24 And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: (You would NOT say that we are to "fist fight" one another unto love and good works!)

Dake says:

a [contention] Greek: paroxusmos (GSN-<G3948>), an incitement; a stirring up. It does not necessarily imply anger or ill will, as proved by the only other place this word is used (Heb. 10:24). They differed and were set in the plan each adopted. Paul was determined because of righteousness, thinking it best for the work of the Lord. John Mark had failed (Acts 13:13), and Paul thought he could not be trusted again. Barnabas was determined because of love for a relative. His love led him to hope for the best. Barnabas would not give up and Paul would not change, so they agreed to disagree taking different parts of the work. Mark proved so faithful that even Paul later wrote for him (2Tim. 4:11). In Christ two can differ and not manifest bad tempers. The way it worked out, two parties instead of one accomplished more work than would have been done otherwise.

I will take my lead from Dake himself. "Some say this was Lazarus, others the rich young rulers, and still other John Mark, but all speculation is useless." - his notes of Mk 14:51

Paul writes to Timothy and instructs him to avoid needless and useless speculations. Implied in 1 Tim 1:4, clearly stated in 2 Tim 2:23.

My personal reasoning for the position that the answer of "Who was the young man..." provides no answer to any pressing issue, doctrine, or question in scripture other than to answer itself. Had the identity of this person been important, scripture would have made it more evident as to who he was.
