Gifts of the Holy Spirit

Post by TruthSeeker »

In 1 Cor 12:11, after listing the 9 gifts of the Holy Spirit in v. 8-10, Paul wrote the Holy Spirit divides these gifts to every man severally as He will.

From my understanding Dake implies that a believer can use these gifts whenever and wherever he/she chooses. From what I see in scripture and what I have been taught, Dake's interpretation would be incorrect. For example if a Prophet was ministering and had everyone who wanted a "word" come up front and he would pray for them, I've been taught that would be violating scripture and more than likely he would be operating out of familiar spirits and not the Holy Spirit.

If anyone can bring clarity on this verse and what Dake taught I would appreciate it. Thanks.

Dake's understanding was that a gift becomes part of the mental and spiritual makeup of the individual and can be exercised at will. Much like a person who has a gift of music to play the guitar. That person can play whenever they choose.
Ecclesiastes 2:3 I searched in my heart how to gratify my flesh with wine, while guiding my heart with wisdom, and how to lay hold on folly, till I might see what was good for the sons of men to do under heaven all the days of their lives.

a [in mine heart to give myself unto wine] One whose heart is right with God will not abandon himself to wine or seek folly, as Solomon did. No godly man will even do it for an experiment, knowing it is contrary to God's will. It seems that Solomon wanted to see if his wisdom would remain in his heart while it was given over to sin. It did remain because wisdom and knowledge become a part of the human mentality, whether acquired by study, experience, divine revelation, or impartation by the Holy Spirit (see Eccl. 2:9).

Do you personally believe that statement is in context with 1 Cor 12 and the 9 gifts of the spirit in a corporate setting. It says in verse 11 as the Spirit wills and not the individual.

The gifts are given as the Spirit wills. 1 Corinthians 12:11 But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.

BUT the operation of those gifts are the decision of the gifted. 1 Corinthians 14:32 And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets.

Notice chapter 14 is all about people using the gifts at (our of order) times during the assembly. So of course that are at the disposal of those who have received them.

1 Corinthians 14:26-31 How is it then, brethren? when ye come together, every one of you hath a psalm, hath a doctrine, hath a tongue, hath a revelation, hath an interpretation. Let all things be done unto edifying.
27 If any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and that by course; and let one interpret.
28 But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God.
29 Let the prophets speak two or three, and let the other judge.
30 If any thing be revealed to another that sitteth by, let the first hold his peace.
31 For ye may all prophesy one by one, that all may learn, and all may be comforted.

Thanks for bringing some clarity. I desire to see more of the gifts manifested in my life and the gifts being given as the Spirit wills in services has been a little confusing.

In verses 8-10 it seems that gifts are given "to one", differentiated from "to all".
Paul builds on separate gifts to separate people in verses 29-30.
Do "all" have such and such a gift?
It seems not., as we are told in verse 31 to "covet earnestly the best gifts", which those possessing "all" gifts would have no need to do.
Could all have every gift?
Nothing is impossible with God, but covet earnestly the best gift of all...charity.

Those are amazing examples of the word of knowledge! Why do you believe the revelation and vocal gifts are more prevalent in churches today than the power gifts?

Well in Pastor's Alph's church in South Africa the power gifts are there as well.

God used Pastor Alph to heal a BLIND LADY while the church watched

Ther United States the church is in a very poor condition and I would not trust every prophecy I heard unless it was backed up by the Word of God and by Signs that confirm the Word.
