If we believe Jesus' words, Jonah's body was dead, just as Jesus body was dead.

Mat.12:39-40;..."But he answered and said unto them, An evil and adulterous generation seeketh after a sign; and there shall no sign be given to it, but the sign of the prophet Jonas:
For as Jonas was three days and three nights in the whale's belly; so shall the Son of man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth."
I'll say...No.
The kindly supplied scripture doesn't say "For as Jonas was dead in the whale's belly..."
Nor does Jesus include His death in His statement.
The "sign" was that Jesus would be "in the heart of the earth", for three days...as Jonas was in the whale.

Frankly, it isn't an important issue to me.

If Jonah was not dead for 3 days and nights neither was Jesus dead for 3 full days and nights.

Yes, Jesus was dead, but the Matt 12 scripture doesn't quote Jesus mentioning death.
Just that He and Jonah would share the experience of captivity for three day and nights.
The sign Jesus would fulfill later was "three days and nights".

How could Jesus be in the "Heart of the earth" and not be dead?
His body was in the tomb from sunset Wednesday to the after sunset on Saturday

Just as Lazarus was dead for 4 days to prove to every one that he was definitely dead, for the Jews believed that the soul hung around for 3 days and sometimes the body revived, but after 3 days and 3 nights it was too late and they were dead for sure.

The heart of the earth is were Hell and Abraham's bosom was at the time of Jesus's death and Jesus emptied Abraham's bosom when He ascended to the Father.
Now Hell has a bigger space to fit all the non-believers in.

For ALL the promises of God in Him are YES, and in Him AMEN, unto the glory of God by us.

Jesus was dead, Jonah wasn't.
Do dead men pray?
In Jonah 2:1 it is written..."Then Jonah prayed unto the Lord his God out of the fish's belly,"

This is an easy one... And you would have thought of it yourself with just a little more thought I am sure.

You asked: "Do dead men pray?"

A DEAD man - Luke 16:22 And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom: the rich man also died, and was buried;

A DEAD man praying - Luke 16:27 Then he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father's house:

The fault in Bible complications is not with God or the Bible, but with men who refuse to believe what God says and think we have to interpret what He says in order to get the meaning. Dake Bible -Mark 11:17 note

Excellent point!

I thought of posting that, earlier, but couldn't take time to post.
